What if no one lied. About anything. At all.
Could you deal with radical honesty?

The world would fall apart...obviously.

I do all the time. I mean, I don't say it, but I hear it. My family and my roommates hold nothing back.

It's not that bad.

Maybe not.
People might just have to learn to suck it up.

I think a lot of people wouldn't be able to handle it. The truth, what? I'm not entitled to everything? PSHAW!

It would drive some to murder. I guarantee.

I don't really speak-up so I don't think I'd have a problem with that.

And I wouldn't mind if people were honest with me forever. I would just take all negative critiques and push them back, far back into my psyche. That's healthy, right?

I firmly and whole heartily believe that lies are a necessity.

I am surprised that anyone would seriously think otherwise.

it would probably drive some of my family to suicide.

I definitely wouldn't want my significant other to tell me that yes, my butt does actually look big in those jeans. I would be sad.

It's not just negative critique. The article talks about completely removing the filter from your brain to your mouth.

Though it's not right, some people do need to be babied. When I'm teaching, whenever I mention something that's wrong, I always mention something that's right.

A positive with a negative. It helps to lessen the blow a bit.

that article was obnoxious and I didn't feel any need to finish it.

how's that?

I'll be honest I read that whole article and while I think Blanton had some good points I think he bordered on honesty sometimes just for the sake of being an asshole and getting a reaction. Being radically honest doesn't necessarily mean you go out of your way to tell people things that upsets them, which is something he seemed to do a lot. It's not a lie if you refrain from even saying it.

i dated a guy like that. no filter, no restraint, either.

i'm still trying to recover from it almost 2 years later...

I agree olie, some of the things he said were unnecessary.
It seemed like he was saying it just to be able to say "see! I could even say THAT! and THAT!"

And Vanilla Coke.
Totally a good idea.

I for one, wouldn't mind a little bit of truthiness.

So often, I live through my paranoia of what I THINK someone is thinking about me. It'd be nice to make that paranoia actual emotion.

If we had generations and generations of no lying I'm pretty sure everyone would adjust. Initially though, the change would drive a lot of things into total chaos and violence.

lol, I think it's a reference to the All About Me.

I don't think radical honesty means being a dick. Maybe that's what makes it "radical" as opposed to just honesty. consider myself to be an honest person. but generally if I can't say anything nice, I won't say anything at all. I'd also feel terribly betrayed if people knew I had made a pledge to be radically honest and started asking me direct questions i don't want to answer.

Well that was poorly typed. I consider myself to be honest.

I read that whole article. I love the part where he tells the kid the bug is dead. Kids need to be told "no" and be told the truth as much as possible. I hate that bullshit about telling kids silly fairy tales about death.

I do appreciate people that are honest because you know where they stand. Even if they say stupid or annoying things.

But I also believe in tact. Or rather, there are times to just shut up. Your opinion or thought does not always need to be voiced. If someone asks you directly, that's a different story.

As for radical honesty, I've read my comment over and over trying to decide if I should hit "Post Comment" because I worry too much that I sound like an idiot.

staffell on Apr 12 '09 at 10:35am
There are different types of honesty. I lot of self proclaimed honest people miss the point and do come off as being dicks.

Honesty is about tact, wording and ultimately, weighing up whether being honest will actually achieve anything.
